After the Referral: Intake, Consultation, and Ongoing Communication
Once a referral is received and in most cases, I offer a complimentary intake to assess whether my services align with the patient’s needs and preferences. The intake allows to preliminarily clarify presenting concerns, ensure clinical suitability, and address any initial questions the patient may have.
After the intake, a full initial consultation will be scheduled as soon as possible, typically within 7-10 days. My aim is to minimise wait times and provide timely access to support.
If, during the intake or initial consultations, it becomes clear that my services are not the most appropriate option, I do my best to suggest alternative referral pathways such as other psychologists, specialist services, or community-based supports – where relevant, possible and available.
With the patient’s consent and in line with Medicare requirements for psychological services, I provide written progress reports to referrers at the required review points. This typically includes clinical impressions, intervention and progress, the proposed therapeutic focus, and whether ongoing engagement is recommended. You’re welcome to indicate your communication preferences at the time of referral.
